What is Decoupled Authentication?

Posted On: Friday, October 9th, 2020

Decoupled Authentication allows a merchant to send an authentication request to a cardholder who is not available online at the time.

Decoupled Authentication is introduced in version 2.2 and is a natural progression from out-of- Band Authentication (OOB). With OOB the Issuer sends a Push Notification to their Banking App which prompts the cardholder to complete the Authentication.

Decoupled takes the concept one step further and allows the cardholder several days to complete the authentication. The Merchant sends an Authentication Request and waits until he is notified via the Endeavour that the authentication has been completed.

Decoupled Authentication is applicable to all Device Channels – these being Browser, APP and 3RI.

The perfect platform for Merchant Initiated Transactions

Decoupled Authentication is ideal when the cardholder is not immediately available for authentication but an Authentication is required. Decoupled Authentication is therefore a type of Merchant-Initiated Transactions (MIT).

Endeavour has created the ultimate guide to Merchant-Initiated Transactions covering every possible aspect of MIT. All the test scenarios are also supported in our Sandbox environment.
